PROVE sales methodology

Qualify the Opportunity With Customer Evidence.

PROVE is the EvidenceSales framework for organizing the customer evidence behind an opportunity: Problem, Relationships, Outcome Fit, Validation, and Execution.

What PROVE is

A Deal Qualification Framework Built Around Evidence.

PROVE gives a sales team a shared language for examining an opportunity. It asks what the customer has established, what is still missing, and where the rep should focus next. It can complement an existing sales methodology by turning qualification questions into a maintained written record.

The five dimensions

Problem. Relationships. Outcome Fit. Validation. Execution.

Each dimension is a place to look for customer evidence and a prompt for the next useful conversation.

Problem

Establish the business problem in the customer's terms, why it matters now, and the measurable outcome worth pursuing. A seller's assumption is not customer evidence.

Review question: What has the customer said or done that proves the problem is important?

Relationships

Identify the people affected by the decision, the people who can move it forward, and the people who can stop it. Record access and customer commitments instead of relying on a contact list alone.

Review question: Who is engaged, what do they care about, and whose support is still missing?

Outcome Fit

Connect the proposed outcome to the customer's priorities, use cases, and decision criteria. Fit has to be demonstrated in the customer's environment, not inferred from product capability alone.

Review question: What evidence shows that the proposed outcome fits the customer's needs?

Validation

Complete the technical and commercial proof the opportunity requires, including evaluation if evaluation is needed. Open validation work stays visible until the customer completes it.

Review question: What must the customer validate before the opportunity can proceed?

Execution

Establish a credible path through approval, procurement, and a recorded outcome. Won, lost, duplicate, and reopened outcomes remain part of the deal record.

Review question: What customer action must happen next, who owns it, and what could prevent it?

Practical checklist

PROVE Deal Qualification Checklist.

Use these questions in a deal review. A useful answer names customer evidence, not just an internal belief.

  1. Problem: Has the customer described a consequential problem and a measurable outcome? Is there evidence that solving it matters now?
  2. Relationships: Are the economic buyer, champion, decision participants, and likely blockers understood? Has the rep earned access to the people required for a decision?
  3. Outcome Fit: Are the customer's use cases and decision criteria confirmed? Has the customer connected the proposed outcome to its priorities?
  4. Validation: Are technical, security, legal, and commercial requirements known? If an evaluation is needed, are its success criteria, kickoff, and result recorded?
  5. Execution: Is the next customer action specific, owned, and dated? Is there a credible path to approval, procurement, and a recorded outcome?
  6. Forecast: Does the rep's forecast judgment agree with the evidence, or is there a visible proof gap?

Framework comparison

How PROVE Complements BANT, MEDDIC, and MEDDPICC.

These frameworks ask overlapping questions, but they organize qualification differently. The right choice depends on the team's sales motion and operating discipline.

FrameworkPrimary emphasisRelationship to PROVE
BANTBudget, Authority, Need, and Timeline provide a compact qualification screen.PROVE broadens the review from an initial screen to customer evidence across the life of the opportunity.
MEDDICMetrics, Economic Buyer, Decision Criteria, Decision Process, Identify Pain, and Champion support complex opportunity qualification. Many MEDDIC questions fit within Problem, Relationships, and Outcome Fit. PROVE groups them with Validation and Execution and keeps the emphasis on maintained evidence.
MEDDPICCMEDDIC plus Paper Process and Competition adds detail for complex enterprise decisions.PROVE can complement that rigor with a simpler evidence-review structure. It does not require a team to abandon MEDDPICC terminology.
PROVEProblem, Relationships, Outcome Fit, Validation, and Execution organize what the customer has established and what remains missing.PROVE is designed to support a maintained deal record and make proof gaps visible beside forecast judgment.

From methodology to record

How EvidenceSales Maintains PROVE.

Methodology supplies the questions. EvidenceSales keeps the answers connected to the opportunity as the deal changes.

Record the evidence

Reps log customer actions against fixed proof gates. Evidence can be retracted without erasing the history.

Derive progress

Deal progress follows completed proof gates. Reps maintain the evidence and do not assign a stage.

Keep judgment separate

Forecast judgment and approved quote value remain separate from progress, making unsupported amounts visible as proof gaps.

Carry the record forward

Deals, Forecast, Won & Lost, and Business Review read from the same maintained record. Authorized manager reporting is read-only.

Illustrative example

A Sample PROVE Deal Review.

This fictional review shows how a team can distinguish an encouraging story from the evidence still required.

Northstar expansion

Forecast judgment: $180,000

Proof gap
Problem
The operations leader confirmed that manual reporting delays weekly decisions and defined a target reduction in preparation time.
Relationships
An operational champion is active. The economic buyer has not yet joined a review.
Outcome Fit
Two required use cases are confirmed. Security requirements remain incomplete.
Validation
The customer requested an evaluation, but success criteria and kickoff are not yet recorded.
Execution
Next customer action: champion schedules the buyer and security review for Friday.

Review conclusion: Keep the forecast judgment visible, but focus the next work on buyer access and agreed evaluation criteria. The opportunity has evidence, but the record does not yet support the full story.
